چکیده

We propose two new methods for measuring tangential peculiar velocities of rich clusters of galaxies. Our first method is based on weak gravitational lensing and takes advantage of the differing images of background galaxies caused by moving and stationary gravitational potentials. Our second method is based on measuring relative frequency shifts between multiple images of a single strongly lensed background galaxy. We illustrate this method using the example of galaxy cluster CL 0024+1654. Subject headings: galaxies: clusters: general– gravitational lensing

Kinematic effect in gravitational lensing by clusters of galaxies

Gravitational lensing provides an efficient tool for the investigation of matter structures, independent of the dynamical or hydrostatic equilibrium properties of the deflecting system. However, it depends on the kinematic status. In fact, either a translational motion or a coherent rotation of the mass distribution can affect the lensing properties. Here, light deflection by galaxy clusters in...

Discovery of Strong Lensing Clusters in the Sdss Dr6

We discovered strong gravitational lensing in 4 galaxy clusters by visual inspection of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey images in Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6). Two of them show the Einstein rings, and the other two show tangential giant arcs. These arcs or rings have large angle separations of > 8 from the bright central galaxies. The lensed images in general are bluer than cluster member galaxies. T...

Discovery of Four New Lensing Systems by Clusters in the Sdss Dr6

We report the discovery of 4 new strong lensing systems by visual inspection of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey images of galaxy clusters in Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6). These arcs or rings have large angle separations of > 8 from the bright central galaxies and show blue color compared to the red cluster galaxies. In additi...

Systematic Effects on Tangential and Radial Arc Statistics: the Finite Source Size and Ellipticities of the Lens and Source

It has been recognized that the arc statistics of gravitational lensing is a useful probe of the density profile of clusters of galaxies. We examine several systematic effects which are important in predicting the number of arcs, with particular attention to the difference between tangential and radial arcs. First we derive an analytic expression of the cross section for radial arcs taking acco...

Probing the Core Structure of Dark Halos with Tangential and Radial Arc Statistics

We study the arc statistics of gravitational lensing generated by dark matter halos in order to probe their density profile. We characterize the halo profile by two parameters, the inner slope of the central cusp α, and the median amplitude of the concentration parameter, cnorm, for a halo of mass 10 14h−1M at z = 0, and compute the numbers of tangential and radial arcs produced by gravitationa...
